Amazonite is a striking blue green variety of Potassium Feldspar valued for its distinctive colour, silky sheen and long history of use in decorative stonework and jewellery. Known for its calming turquoise tones and natural white veining, Amazonite has been used by cultures around the world for thousands of years.

What Is Amazonite and Why Is It Significant?
Amazonite is a variety of Microcline, a Potassium Feldspar mineral composed primarily of potassium aluminium silicate with the chemical formula KAlSi₃O₈. It belongs to the Tectosilicate group of minerals, which includes other well known feldspar varieties.
Its vibrant blue green colour has long attracted interest from collectors and jewellers. Despite its name, Amazonite has never been reliably found in the Amazon River Basin. The name originates from early European explorers who believed the stone came from this region.
Today, important deposits are found in locations such as Brazil, Madagascar, the United States and parts of Australia.

Geological Formation and Mineralogy
Amazonite forms within granitic pegmatites, which are coarse grained igneous rocks formed during the final stages of magma crystallisation. These environments allow large crystals of feldspar minerals to develop slowly over time.
The characteristic colour of Amazonite is still not fully understood. Research suggests it may be influenced by trace elements such as lead, rubidium and thallium within the crystal structure. Structural defects within the feldspar lattice may also play a role in producing the distinctive turquoise colour.
These factors combine to create the unique colour variations seen in Amazonite specimens.

Amazonite is relatively durable but can be sensitive to sudden impacts due to its perfect cleavage.
Amazonite can be gently cleansed with water, although prolonged soaking is not recommended.
Care tips:
Clean briefly under running water and dry thoroughly
Avoid strong chemicals or ultrasonic cleaning
Store separately from harder minerals to prevent scratching
Because Amazonite may contain trace elements such as lead, it should not be used in drinking water or oils intended for topical use.
Amazonite in History and Cultural Use
Amazonite has been used in jewellery and decorative objects for over 3000 years. Ancient Egyptian artisans carved the stone into amulets and ornamental pieces, while other cultures valued it for its colour and symbolism.
Its soothing turquoise tones have often been associated with calmness, communication and harmony.
