A substantial sphalerite specimen from the celebrated Picos de Europa mining district in Santander, northern Spain — one of Europe's most historically significant sources of this mineral, and one that consistently produces material of exceptional resinous lustre and internal fire.

The front face reads dark at first — a dense, near-black brown mass with the characteristic adamantine sheen of iron-rich sphalerite.
