What is Yellow Calcite? It belongs to the same mineral species as Blue Calcite, Cobaltoan Calcite, Zebra Calcite, and the many other Calcite colour varieties: all are fundamentally the same calcium carbonate mineral, with colour differences arising entirely from trace elements and impurities rather than from any change in the essential chemistry. Calcite forms the primary component of limestone, marble, and chalk, and it is produced in vast quantities by marine organisms that use dissolved calcium carbonate from seawater to build their shells and skeletons. Some pieces will glow brightly, others not at all, and the difference tells you something about the specific impurity suite of each specimen.
