Tisbury Starstone is a fossilised coral found exclusively in the ancient soils of Tisbury, Wiltshire, formed approximately 145 million years ago during the Late Jurassic period when this part of England lay beneath a warm, shallow sea. The star patterns are cross-sections through the coral polyp structures, while the feathering reveals the same structures cut at a different angle — both visible here in the same piece because of the sideways orientation of the carve. It is composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), hardness 3–4 Mohs. Handle with care — fossilised coral is fragile and should not be dropped or knocked against harder surfaces.
