Tanzanite is a calcium aluminium sorosilicate formed through metamorphic processes. Its violet-blue colouring comes from trace amounts of vanadium, and its strong pleochroism allows blue, violet, and subtle red tones to appear depending on light and viewing angle.

These pieces were handpicked at the Tucson Gem Show, chosen intuitively for their colour, character, and energy.

The shades shift across the batch: from a strong, saturated sky blue through to a softer, greener blue — the kind of variation that makes each piece genuinely individual. The surface is raw and natural, with the texture and matrix that only rough material has. Small in size at 1–2cm, but full of presence.

From the Chala Mine in Spahievo, Bulgaria — a locality producing some of the most pyrite-dominant amethyst specimens in the world.

On this piece, pyrite is the headline act. Bright, brassy micro-crystalline pyrite blankets the face in a near-continuous metallic crust, with violet amethyst points visible beneath — purple windows glowing through a golden lattice. Catch it in direct light and the surface ignites. The profile reveals the piece's true character: elongated amethyst points running along the edge, partially draped in pyrite, giving a clear sense of the co-crystallisation in cross-section. A freeform rubellite tourmaline and quartz matrix specimen from Brazil, combining two minerals in a single striking piece.

Multiple rubellite crystal clusters burst through and across a chunky milky quartz host — vivid magenta-pink prisms ranging from short stubby terminations to longer needle-like crystals, densely packed at the base and sparser toward the crown. The quartz matrix is semi-translucent white with a sugary texture, providing strong contrast against the saturated pink of the tourmaline. The reverse shows the raw, unworked character of the piece, with earthy matrix and additional rubellite growth visible throughout.

From the celebrated Huanggang Mine in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia — a tall, columnar blueberry fluorite specimen with an unusually structured silhouette and a naturally occurring window into the quartz beneath.

Deep midnight-blue botryoidal fluorite nodules stack in a vertical column, their rounded surfaces carrying a high resinous lustre with subtle violet undertones. At the mid-point, a thinner section of fluorite coating reveals the clear quartz host beneath — the surrounding indigo casting a cool blue-green tint through the crystal, a trick of light and mineral layering unique to this piece. White druzy quartz crystals dust the darker fluorite surface throughout, catching the light in contrast to the deep blue. A striking 198.5g Blue Baryte specimen measuring 81x85x35mm, from the renowned Cavnic Mine in Romania. This piece has a wonderfully open and sculptural quality, with sweeping bladed crystals fanning outward in layered formations that create real depth and movement across the display face. The side profile reveals the raw sandy matrix underneath, showing clearly how the blue crystals have grown outward from the host rock. Blue Baryte is a barium sulfate mineral in the Barite group, with its characteristic steel blue colouring attributed to trace elements within the crystal structure, and a Mohs hardness of just 3 to 3.5 that gives its crystals their distinctive thin bladed habit.

Seriphos Quartz is a rare and striking form of green Quartz found only on the Greek island of Serifos in the Aegean Sea. Known for its vivid colour and sharply defined crystal shapes, it is one of the most distinctive regional Quartz varieties in the world.

Seriphos Quartz forms within metamorphic rocks that have been altered by intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth. During this process, hot mineral rich fluids move through fractures in the rock and begin to crystallise. The colouring can range from soft pale green to deep olive or even bluish tones depending on the specific balance of mineral inclusions and geological conditions at the time of formation. Seriphos Quartz is found exclusively on Serifos, where historic mining sites exposed pockets of beautifully formed crystals perched on matrix or growing in radiating clusters.

Flower Agate is a variety of Chalcedony discovered in Madagascar in 2018. The flower-like formations are three-dimensional plumes of opaque Chalcedony suspended within a translucent base, visible from the surface as petal-shaped inclusions that genuinely resemble blossoms frozen in stone. The orange and rusty tones in this piece come from iron oxide present during crystallisation — the same chemistry that colours many Agates and Jaspers, here producing something genuinely unusual within the Flower Agate family.
