Iolite is a violet blue variety of Cordierite formed in metamorphic and igneous environments. Known for its strong pleochroism, it can display different shades of blue, violet or grey depending on the viewing angle. Historically used as a navigational aid by Viking explorers due to its light polarising properties, Iolite is valued for both its optical character and colour depth.
