Sugilite is a potassium sodium lithium iron manganese silicate that forms within manganese rich environments under specific geological conditions. The mineral was first identified in Japan in 1944 by petrologist Kenichi Sugi, from whom it takes its name. Some of the most recognised material originates from manganese deposits in South Africa, where its strong colour and rarity have made it highly valued by collectors..
