What separates Smokey Quartz from its colourless counterpart is not a difference in chemistry but in physics: the smoky colour is the result of natural radiation acting on trace aluminium impurities within the crystal structure over vast geological timescales. These trapped electrons, known as colour centres, absorb specific wavelengths of visible light and produce the brown to grey smoky appearance. The intensity of the colour depends on the concentration of aluminium impurities, the cumulative radiation dose the crystal has been exposed to, and the temperature history of the rock. Very dark, uniform, near-opaque material with no tonal variation is more likely to have been artificially irradiated or may be a different material entirely.
