Hypersthene is a member of the Pyroxene mineral family, forming within igneous and metamorphic rocks as magnesium and iron-rich minerals crystallise under high temperature conditions. Its name comes from the Greek for above strength. When light moves across the surface, Hypersthene often reveals a soft silvery flash known as schiller, created by light reflecting from internal mineral layers.

Its name comes from the Greek for above strength, a reference to its hardness relative to Hornblende, the mineral it was originally compared to. The schiller effect — the soft, moving shimmer visible when light catches the surface — is caused by light reflecting from thin parallel layers of mineral inclusions within the crystal structure, similar to the effect seen in Labradorite and Moonstone. It is one of those stones that rewards slow handling: the shimmer only reveals itself as the piece moves.
