Dioptase is a rare copper cyclosilicate mineral that forms as a secondary oxidation product in the weathered zones of copper ore deposits, and it is the copper content within its crystal structure that produces its extraordinary intense blue-green colour, one of the most vivid of any mineral in the natural world.

Dioptase was first discovered in the 18th century in the Altyn-Tube mine in Kazakhstan. Its name is derived from the Greek word diops or "double appearance" due to its notable pleochroism. Dioptase is believed to have powerful energetic properties.
