A striking large-scale mineral specimen from Boundary Gate Pocket, Nenthead, Cumbria, featuring lustrous dark sphalerite set across a white quartz matrix.

The front presents a dramatic contrast of metallic black to deep brown sphalerite crystals, bright white quartz and warm earthy accents from the associated mineral growth. The reverse reveals further texture and colour, giving this substantial specimen plenty of detail to explore from different angles.

Collected from Boundary Gate Pocket in January 2003, this is a characterful piece with a strong sense of locality and provenance. Minor smithsonite adds to the mineral interest of the specimen without taking away from the bold sphalerite and quartz combination.

Charoite was first discovered in the 1940s in the Chara River area of Siberia, the river for which it was named.

Charoite is formed through a complex geological process involving the alteration of limestone by alkaline fluids in association with other minerals such as Aegirine, Microcline, and Tinaksite.

A substantial sphalerite specimen from the celebrated Picos de Europa mining district in Santander, northern Spain — one of Europe's most historically significant sources of this mineral, and one that consistently produces material of exceptional resinous lustre and internal fire.

The front face reads dark at first — a dense, near-black brown mass with the characteristic adamantine sheen of iron-rich sphalerite. Hold it to the light and the surface opens up: patches of translucent amber push through the dark exterior, glowing from within and hinting at the warmth concealed inside. The flat reverse face tells a different story entirely — golden highlights streak across the surface in vivid veins, and the translucent amber is far more prevalent here, the mineral thinning enough to reveal its true colour and depth. A pocket of bright white calcite anchors the lower base, its scalenohedra contrasting sharply against the dark mineral mass. Under torchlight, the entire specimen ignites in a deep, warm amber glow.

Barite on Malachite | 52mm | Shangulowe Mine, DR Congo

From the Shangulowe Mine in Kambove, one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s most celebrated copper belt localities — a source renowned for producing some of the finest malachite specimens in the world.

This piece has a distinctly different character to its companion — an elongated, blade-like form with dramatic barite crystals projecting outward from the malachite host, giving it a spiky, architectural silhouette. The front face is covered in vivid emerald-green botryoidal malachite with tightly packed orbs and characteristic concentric banding, interspersed with glassy colourless barite crystals. Flower Agate Flame | 9.2cm | Madagascar

A larger Flower Agate flame from Madagascar with real character — pink plume patterning across the front face, natural cracks within the stone, and on the reverse, a distinctive white Agate inclusion set against a smoky, translucent base rather than the typical pink. One piece, sold as seen.

Flower Agate is a variety of Chalcedony discovered in Madagascar in 2018. The flower-like formations are three-dimensional plumes of opaque pink and white Chalcedony suspended within a translucent base, visible from the surface as petal-shaped inclusions that genuinely resemble blossoms frozen in stone. They form as silica-rich fluids infiltrate cavities in volcanic rock, with the plumes growing outward as the material slowly crystallises.
