Its colour comes primarily from Lazurite, a sodalite-group mineral, and the gold flecks are natural Pyrite — iron sulphide — that crystallises within the matrix during metamorphism. The white veining, where present, is Calcite. The Madani mines in Afghanistan have been producing Lapis Lazuli for over 6,000 years and remain the source of the finest material in the world, prized for its intense, saturated blue and well-distributed Pyrite.
