How to Cleanse and Recharge Your Crystals: A Complete Guide

Crystals travel a long way before they reach you. From their point of origin through processing, shipping, handling, and display, each stone absorbs the energies of its environment along the way. Regular cleansing and recharging helps restore a crystal's natural vibration, ensuring it is working at its full potential when you use it.
This guide covers nine tried and tested methods for cleansing and recharging your crystals at home, suitable for beginners and experienced collectors alike. We have also included answers to the most commonly asked questions at the end.
Why Do Crystals Need Cleansing?
Crystals interact with the energies around them. Over time, and particularly after periods of heavy use or emotional intensity, their vibration can become misaligned or dulled. Cleansing clears away accumulated energy, while recharging restores vitality and strength to the stone.
Think of it like this — even the most powerful tool works better when it is well maintained.
Before You Begin: Is Your Crystal Water Safe?
Some cleansing methods involve water, and not all crystals are safe to submerge. As a general rule, crystals with a Mohs hardness below 6, or those ending in "ite," should be kept away from water. This includes Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Lepidolite, and Angelite among others. When in doubt, choose a dry cleansing method.
9 Methods for Cleansing and Recharging Your Crystals
1. Sage Smudging

Smudging with sage is one of the oldest and most widely used methods of energetic cleansing across many cultures and traditions. Sage smoke has a deep purifying effect and is our preferred method here at Tali and Loz for cleansing crystals before they leave us and before they arrive with you.
Most varieties of sage also have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, meaning smudging offers both an energetic and a physical cleanse.
How to do it: Light a sage smudge stick and allow it to produce a steady stream of smoke. Either hold your crystals in the smoke for 20 to 30 seconds each, or place them in a ceramic or clay bowl and fan the smoke around them. Set a clear intention as you work.
Safe for: All crystals.
⚠️ Never leave burning sage unattended. Always keep water nearby.
2. Oud Smoking
Oud, also known as agarwood, is one of the most prized and ancient aromatic resins in the world, with a long history of use in spiritual and ceremonial practice across the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia. Its rich, grounding smoke is considered deeply purifying and is used to clear and elevate the energy of spaces, objects, and crystals.
Oud carries a heavier, earthier smoke than sage, making it particularly well suited to grounding crystals and those associated with the Root and Earth Chakras. It is also a beautiful choice for those who prefer a more luxurious or ceremonial approach to their cleansing practice.
How to do it: Burn oud resin on a charcoal disc in a heat-safe bowl or incense burner. Pass your crystals slowly through the rising smoke, holding each one for 20 to 30 seconds. You can also place crystals around the burner and allow the smoke to drift over them.
Safe for: All crystals.
⚠️ Always use in a well-ventilated space and never leave burning charcoal unattended.
3. Dry Brown Rice

Dry brown rice is a simple and highly effective method for drawing out stagnant or negative energy from crystals. It works through absorption, pulling unwanted energy away from the stone overnight.
How to do it: Fill a bowl with dry brown rice and fully submerge your crystals. Leave for a minimum of 24 hours. Dispose of the rice immediately afterwards — do not cook or consume it, as it is considered to have absorbed the released energy.
Safe for: All crystals, including water-sensitive stones.
4. Running Water
Water is one of the most instinctively natural cleansing forces, and submerging a crystal in moving water is one of the most immediate ways to clear its energy. Natural running water such as a stream or river is most effective, as the movement of the water actively carries energy away from the stone.
How to do it: Hold your crystal under natural running water for 30 to 60 seconds, visualising the water washing away any stagnant or misaligned energy. Running tap water is a perfectly effective alternative. Dry thoroughly afterwards.
Safe for: Hard crystals only (Mohs 6 and above). Suitable for Quartz varieties, Amethyst, Obsidian, and Jasper. Not suitable for Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, or any soft or porous stones.
5. Saltwater

Salt has been used for purification across cultures for thousands of years. Combined with water, it creates a powerful cleansing solution that is particularly effective for stones that have absorbed heavy or dense energy.
How to do it: Dissolve rock salt or sea salt in a bowl of water and submerge your crystals for a few hours or overnight. Natural seawater is the most potent option if accessible. Rinse thoroughly with clean water afterwards and dry immediately.
Safe for: Hard, non-porous crystals only. The same water safety rules apply — avoid using saltwater with soft, metallic, or layered stones as salt can be particularly corrosive to certain minerals.
6. Earth Burial
Returning a crystal to the earth is one of the most grounding and thorough cleansing methods available. Soil naturally absorbs and neutralises energy, and direct contact with the earth allows a crystal to reset fully.
How to do it: Place your crystals directly onto soil, or bury them a few centimetres below the surface for 24 hours. A garden bed, plant pot, or a patch of natural ground all work well. Mark the spot clearly so you can find them again. Crystals placed in plant pots also benefit the plants growing nearby.
Safe for: Most crystals. Be mindful of direct sunlight exposure for colour-sensitive stones such as Amethyst and Rose Quartz. Keep an eye out for curious wildlife.
7. Other Crystals

Certain crystals carry a sufficiently high vibration to cleanse and recharge the stones placed alongside them. This is one of the most passive and low-maintenance methods, making it ideal for daily maintenance between deeper cleansing sessions.
Selenite is the most widely used cleansing crystal. Place your stones on a Selenite slab or alongside a Selenite wand for a minimum of 12 hours. Selenite does not absorb negative energy and does not need to be cleansed itself, though it does benefit from a full moon bath.
Large Amethyst cathedrals generate a strong, high-vibration field. Placing smaller crystals inside or on top of an Amethyst geode is an effective and beautiful way to cleanse and recharge your collection simultaneously.
Carnelian is a self-cleansing stone that also has the ability to cleanse surrounding crystals. Choose a mid to large piece for the strongest effect.
Safe for: All crystals.
8. Sound Cleansing
Sound cleansing works on the principle that vibrational frequency can shift and clear stagnant energy. It is one of the most universally safe cleansing methods as it requires no contact with water, soil, or smoke, and is suitable for all crystals including the most delicate and water-sensitive stones.
Singing bowls, tuning forks, bells, and even vocal toning can all be used effectively. Tibetan singing bowls and crystal bowls are particularly popular for this purpose.
How to do it: Place your crystals near or around the singing bowl. Strike or play the bowl and allow the sound vibration to wash over the crystals for several minutes. Set a clear intention as you work. You can also hold individual crystals close to the bowl as you play.
Safe for: All crystals, including water-sensitive and fragile specimens.
9. Moonlight Recharging
Moonlight is our favourite method for recharging crystals here at Tali and Loz, and it is the one we return to most consistently. The full moon emits a powerful, amplified energy that restores vitality and strength to crystals in a way that feels complete and lasting. Crystals left out under a full moon feel noticeably different afterwards — full, vibrant, and alive.
How to do it: Place your crystals outside on the ground or on a windowsill where they will receive direct moonlight. Begin the ritual in the evening and bring them inside by morning to avoid prolonged sun exposure. The full moon is the most powerful time, though any moon phase carries cleansing and recharging properties.
Safe for: All crystals. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight for colour-sensitive stones.
Sunlight: A Brief Note
Brief exposure to sunlight can recharge certain crystals, particularly those with strong solar associations such as Citrine, Carnelian, and Tiger's Eye. However, many crystals will fade with prolonged sun exposure, including Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Fluorite, and Aquamarine. If you choose to use sunlight, keep exposure to one to two hours maximum and monitor your stones closely.
How to Recharge Using Breath and Intention

One of the most accessible and immediate methods of cleansing is breathwork combined with clear intention. While simple, it is considered highly effective in many traditions as it creates a direct energetic connection between you and your crystal.
How to do it: Hold your crystal in both hands, close your eyes, and take a slow deep breath. As you exhale, direct your breath gently onto the crystal, visualising it being cleared and filled with fresh, positive energy. Repeat three times with clear intention.
Safe for: All crystals.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I cleanse my crystals? There is no single answer, but as a general guide, cleansing once per moon cycle — approximately every 29 days — is a good baseline. Crystals that are worn daily, used in healing work, or carried through stressful periods will benefit from more frequent cleansing. If a crystal feels heavy, dull, or energetically flat, cleanse it as soon as possible and allow it to fully recharge before using it again.
Do Selenite, Amethyst, and Carnelian need cleansing if they cleanse other crystals? Yes. While these crystals are highly effective cleansers, they still benefit from regular care. Carnelian is self-cleansing but genuinely loves a full moon bath. Selenite and large Amethyst cathedrals do not appear to be weakened by cleansing other crystals, but giving them a moonlight recharge regularly maintains their vitality and keeps them working at their best.
How do I know when my crystal is properly cleansed and recharged? Trust your intuition. Hold the crystal between your thumb and index finger, close your eyes, and tune into its energy. A well-cleansed and recharged crystal will feel vibrant, clear, and alive. If it still feels flat or heavy after cleansing, give it another session or set it aside for a full moon recharge. With practice, reading the energy of your crystals becomes second nature.
Can I use multiple methods together? Absolutely. Many practitioners combine methods for a deeper cleanse — smudging followed by moonlight recharging, for example, or earth burial followed by a sound cleansing session. There are no strict rules. Work with what feels right for you and your crystals.
Final Thoughts
Cleansing and recharging your crystals does not need to be complicated or time-consuming. Even the simplest methods, done with intention and care, make a genuine difference to the energy and vitality of your collection. Build a routine that works for your lifestyle, follow the moon cycle where you can, and your crystals will reward you with their full, natural vibration.
