A remarkable 9.5g permineralized wood specimen measuring approximately 32x35x8mm, from Zwenkau near Leipzig in Germany, one of Central Europe's most significant lignite mining regions. This extraordinary little piece carries the clear texture of original wood grain across its surface, preserved in exquisite detail, while the entire structure glitters with a fine metallic sparkle where minerals have replaced the original organic material at a cellular level. The deep brown-black colouring and distinct vertical striations of the wood grain are beautifully intact. Permineralization occurs when mineral-rich groundwater saturates organic material such as wood after burial, with minerals gradually depositing within the cellular structure and replacing it atom by atom over millions of years, preserving the original form in extraordinary detail. The Zwenkau and Leipzig region is underlain by Eocene-age lignite deposits, meaning this wood fragment is likely in the region of 35 to 45 million years old.
