Agate is a banded variety of Chalcedony (a cryptocrystalline form of silica), which is primarily formed within volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Agate was named by the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus, who discovered it along the shore line of the Dirillo River or Achates in Sicily (between the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE).
