Chalcopyrite: The Copper Ore Behind Modern Electricity

Chalcopyrite is the world's most important copper ore mineral, the source of more copper than any other mineral in history, from Bronze Age smelting to the electrical wiring of modern buildings and the batteries of electric vehicles. It is also one of the most visually distinctive sulphide minerals available to collectors, producing a vivid iridescent tarnish through the same thin-film interference physics that colours soap bubbles.
