Sugilite was first identified in Japan in 1944, then largely overlooked for three decades. A single discovery at a South African manganese mine in 1975 changed that entirely. Today it is one of the genuinely rare minerals in the collector market, with vivid purple coloration driven by manganese chemistry and a geological origin story unlike almost anything else on the shelf.
