Larimar was first discovered in the early 20th century in the Dominican Republic by a local Dominican and a visiting Peace Corps volunteer. They named the stone Larimar after combining Larissa, the name of the local man’s daughter, and mar, the Spanish word for sea, after the crystal’s resemblance to the waters of the Caribbean.

Larimar is formed through a combination of volcanic activity and hydrothermal processes, and is primarily composed of pectolite, a sodium calcium silicate mineral. It owes its distinctive blue colour to the presence of copper impurities.
