A substantial sphalerite specimen from the celebrated Picos de Europa mining district in Santander, northern Spain — one of Europe's most historically significant sources of this mineral, and one that consistently produces material of exceptional resinous lustre and internal fire.

The front face reads dark at first — a dense, near-black brown mass with the characteristic adamantine sheen of iron-rich sphalerite. Hold it to the light and the surface opens up: patches of translucent amber push through the dark exterior, glowing from within and hinting at the warmth concealed inside. The flat reverse face tells a different story entirely — golden highlights streak across the surface in vivid veins, and the translucent amber is far more prevalent here, the mineral thinning enough to reveal its true colour and depth. From the Shangulowe Mine in Kambove, one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s most celebrated copper belt localities — a source renowned for producing some of the finest malachite specimens in the world.

A chunky, three-dimensional specimen with a dramatic crown of upright barite needle clusters erupting from the top face. The barite crystals are elongated and translucent, coated in fine emerald-green malachite that gives them a vivid, almost iridescent quality.
