Charoite is one of the rarest minerals on Earth, found in only one location: the Murun massif in Siberia, Russia, along the Chara River from which it takes its name. It is a complex potassium calcium sodium silicate that forms through the metamorphism of limestone by alkaline igneous intrusions, a geologically unusual process that produces its characteristic swirling fibrous structure. The violet colour, which ranges from pale lavender to deep purple, is intrinsic to the mineral itself.
