Agate is a banded variety of Chalcedony (a cryptocrystalline form of silica), which is primarily formed within volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Because they love to form on or within pre-existing rocks it is hard to accurately determine the time of their formation. Agate was named by the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus, who discovered it along the shore line of the Dirillo River or Achates in Sicily sometime between the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE.
