You have just discovered the incredible world of crystal healing!

Amazing!

It is not hard to imagine the time, when I too was a beginner, slowly starting to explore the world of crystal healing stones. Since then, I have found how they can support and enrich my life in numerous ways. This guide is written for everyone that has just started and is curious to learn more about the properties of crystals. You might be wondering where to begin, what stones to pick and how to make the most out of their beneficial qualities.

Let’s get started and answer the most frequently asked questions, in this crystal healing guide 101.

What can crystals help with?

Crystals are known for their healing qualities and address specific needs for the body and mind. Some are well suited to combating stress and anxiety, some aid in restful sleep, and others can help with concentration, focus and courage.

Their use can be historically traced to antiquity. One of the first mentions of

crystal healing comes from the Ancient Sumerians in 4000 BCE. The Egyptians used turquoise and emerald for protection and strength and incorporated them into their jewellery, amulets and cosmetic products. Similarly, the Ancient Greeks favoured certain crystals - the name crystals come from the Greek word for “ice”. Amulets made from amethyst were used to prevent intoxication and control addiction tendencies.

While the use of healing crystals did not cross into modern medicinal practices, many cultures continued to practice and benefit from their use.  Many tribal cultures have retained the ancient wisdom and knowledge that has been passed down from one generation to the next. Nowadays, there is much to learn from seasoned crystal healers and practitioners that can continue to expand the way we work and approach crystal healing.

How do crystals work?

Crystals work because of their stone energy. This may sound confusing and abstract to sceptical minds that dismiss healing crystals, but we have all been witness to good and bad energy in life. When a person with bad energy walks into a room, it can leave you drained and tired. Good energy on the other hand is like the first sip of coffee in the morning - it makes you happy and invigorated.

In recent years, healing crystals are no longer an alternative holistic approach for hippies, but beneficial tools used by everyday normal people, major celebrities, your massage therapist, esthetician and numerous others.

The same way we describe certain people as “carrying good energy” healing crystals are also tuned to specific frequency vibrations and can offer a different experience. The practice of using crystals for meditation, healing and nourishment is called “working” and often requires a crystal to be placed directly on the skin. Some crystals are also effective when placed near you or in the same room.

How are the chakras connected to crystal healing?

The energy stored within the human body is concentrated on specific energy centres. These are called chakras. When the energy within our bodies is not balanced, it can manifest psychologically and physically. Healing crystals can aid in the process, and strengthen, balance or unblock the energy centres that are struggling.

There are many ways chakras can become unbalanced, whether that is stress, lifestyle, or exposure to negative energy from other people or pollution.

Our in-depth guide on the 7 Chakras can help answer all your questions, here.

What are some common crystal shapes?

The most common shapes are towers, clusters, wands, spheres and

Crystal tower, pyramid and sphere

tumblestones but that depends on preference, availability and a whole other range of factors. Just like the healing properties of each crystal can differ based on its characteristics, the way it is shaped - either naturally or by hand - is associated with different properties.

Egg-shaped crystals are linked to fertility, pyramids represent the ascension of the body towards the universe, and tumblestones are the perfect size to carry around in your pocket.

What crystals do I need?

There are many ways to look at this question. For starters, you can begin by examining what is currently missing in your life or identify areas that could be improved. This will narrow down your search when looking at crystals online and give you a focus or direction. There are also some crystals, like Rose Quartz and Amethyst, that are popular with most crystal lovers and have beneficial qualities that will support everyone.

If you have the chance, you may also prefer to experience the vibrations of a range of crystals first, before you let your intuition guide you to what you need. We will discuss how to select a crystal in the following section.

How do I select a crystal that is best for me?

Most people that have been working with crystals for a while are of the belief

4 crystal towers

that crystals find you, not the other way around. Overall, there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to picking the crystal that is ideal for you. Some describe the sensation of finding the right stone as a “calling”. You may also hear crystal enthusiasts say they select a crystal when they feel “drawn” to a certain stone.

Especially during particularly stressful and difficult times, the “calling” sensation can be quite strong. When that happens, it is your body’s way of telling you, that the energy of that crystal is vibrating at a rate that will be beneficial to your current state. After using or meditating with the crystal, that intense vibrational pull may even fade away, as it has done its job and is no longer needed.

When choosing a crystal in a store, let your instinct and subconscious mind guide you towards where it needs to go. If you feel like you are pulled to a certain stone, try placing it on your hands and notice how it makes you feel. At this point, you may try closing your eyes and tuning in to the vibrations.

What to look out for when selecting crystals?

The main thing to look out for when selecting a crystal is quality. That is, of course, in addition to how the crystal feels when you hold it on your hand and the general aura and vibrations. To ensure you are getting a high-quality crystal when shopping online, thorough research is needed. Unfortunately, not every crystal seller can be trusted.

A few things you can do to ensure you get a high-quality crystal are:

  • Check customer reviews on their website and independent forums
  • Assess the level of professionalism: photography, website functionality, informative product descriptions
  • Look at their “about” page for statements on authenticity, and how they source crystals
  • You can also try to contact them with a specific question to see how (or if) they respond

Where to keep or display crystals?

Here, the possibilities are endless. Whether you are a believer in the healing power of crystals or simply admire them for their fascinating colours and intricate textures, crystals lend a hint of glamour and mystique everywhere they are placed.

Crystals as Home Decor

You can keep crystals next to your windowsill, on the coffee table, lined up on

shelves, or next to your books. Rose Quartz in your bedside table is both stunning to look at and will spread loving and energy-clearing vibrations.

Crystals as Jewellery

Bracelets, rings, pendants, or earrings. Whatever you prefer, wearing crystal jewellery is both elegant and immensely beneficial. It allows the crystals to stay close to your body, and specific energy centres (chakras) and spread their beneficial qualities all day.

How to use crystals in your daily life?

The simplest way to incorporate crystals in your daily life is by keeping them near the places you spend a lot of time. That could be your office space, your bedroom, your living room table and of course on you! Small tumbled stones can be kept in your pocket, bag or wallet. For some crystals, it is best to have direct skin contact with the crystal for maximum effect. In this case, crystal jewellery is a great option.

You can also use crystals in your daily life during your meditation, yoga practise or self-care skincare routine, with a jade roller.

How to care for crystals?

Crystals look after us in our times of need, so it is only fair that we care for them

properly to ensure they are working at their best. When it comes to crystal care, you will soon be familiar with the practice of cleaning, charging and programming. In this section we will also answer two commonly asked questions:

What is programming a crystal?

How do I cleanse crystals?

First steps: It all starts in the beginning when you first bring your crystal home from the shop. You will want to cleanse the crystal straight away, to remove any negative vibrations it is carrying.

**Here at Tali & Loz, all crystals are cleansed with sage and bathed in the

Candle, sage, selenite stick and sage stick

moonlight before they make their journey to you.

  • Cleansing: There are many different methods to cleanse crystals.
These include using water, salt, soil, light and smoke. Not every stone can be cleansed with all methods. Porous stones for example like Pyrite can be damaged by water and should be kept dry. Most crystals can also be cleansed by placing them inside an amethyst geode for at least 24 hours.

  • Charging: Cleansing and charging sound similar and can even be combined but cleansing always precedes the charging. You can charge a crystal using the light of a full moon, crystal clusters, the sun, or soil. It is best to experiment with your favourite combination of cleansing and charging practices to see what feels right for you.

  • Programming: Programming is where you use the power of your intention to focus the energy of the crystal on something specific. As you transmit your thoughts into the stone, its energy will manifest your thoughts. This is why it is very important to clear your mind first and be in the right headspace. You don’t want to overload the crystal or create conflicting energies. A clear and calm mindset is also important for every previous step. You can achieve this by tuning in to a mantra, meditation, or anything else that you prefer.

    Summary & Things to Remember

In this crystal healing guide, we have covered a wide variety of topics relating to how crystals work, what they can be used for and what are the best stones for you to start with.

The main things to keep in mind when it comes to working with crystals are:

    • They have been in use for thousands of years and treasured by most ancient and tribal civilizations.
    • Crystals work by amplifying, storing and absorbing energy. Every stone is tuned to different vibrational frequencies. Thus their properties and the effect it has on you, can differ.
    • Only you can identify what the best crystal for you is. Let your intuition guide you and try to approach every stone with a clear and focused mind.
    • Make sure to take care of your precious healing stones by regularly cleansing them. Not every method of cleansing is appropriate for every stone. You can also program crystals with a certain thought or energy.
