A naturally formed cross-shaped Staurolite twin crystal from the ancient metamorphic terrains of the Kola Peninsula.

A wonderful 18.7g Staurolite fairy cross specimen measuring 3.3x3x1.5cm, from Semiostrovye, Keivy, on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, a noted locality for this remarkable mineral. The specimen displays a beautifully clear cruciform twin, with two dark brown-black Staurolite crystals intergrown at near-right angles across a fine-grained silvery grey matrix that sparkles with mica inclusions. The cross formation is unmistakable and deeply geometric, making this a highly striking natural object. Staurolite is an iron aluminium silicate mineral that forms exclusively during high-grade regional metamorphism, and its famous cross-shaped habit occurs when two crystals grow together in a precise twinning arrangement governed by the mineral's crystal structure. The Kola Peninsula is one of Russia's most mineralogically rich regions, and specimens from the Keivy locality are well regarded among collectors.
