Amazonite is a beautiful green turquoise stone with grey and white coloured veins running through its surface. Amazonite, or Amazon Stone, was so named because it was thought to have originally been found in the Amazon River Basin in Brazil, though no deposits have ever been unearthed. Instead, Amazonite comes from other parts of Brazil, as well as Madagascar, Australia and the United States. Used in jewellery for over 3000 years, it has only been described as a unique mineral since the 18th century. Amazonite’s unique green colour is also something of a mystery - with factors including the presence of Lead, Rubidium and Thallium in the feldspars, as well as extremely high contents of Lead Monoxide (or PbO). For this reason, Amazonite must not be used in oils for topical use, or in drinking or bathing water.
